With the scare of poisons in the pet foods it is time to think about making your own chicken dog food. The reason to use chicken is it is much less costly than other meats. Dogs love the taste and get all the protein they require, but you can stay on a budget. Many people want to make their own dog food but want it to be cost effective. Using chicken instead of other meat is the best way to do this. You can get chicken just about anywhere for a great price. Saving TimeWhen it comes to making your chicken dog food you will also want to save on time. No one wants to spend hours every night cooking for their pet and family. The best thing about cooked chicken is that it can last much longer in the refrigerator than other meats. You can also freeze your dog food once it is done. If you want to save on the most time it is best to make large batches of food at a time to make sure that you have enough for the whole week. You can package it in freezer friendly bags or containers and take one out each day. Meal Supplementation A great chicken dog food is a great way to supplement your dog's store bought food for less. Most manufactured foods do not contain all that your dog needs each day for a healthy diet. When you make your own food, you are giving him a better chance of being satisfied. Not everyone can make enough food to solely feed their dog only homemade foods. You can however supplement with your kibble to add the extra nutrients. This will allow you to buy less of everything or make it last twice as long. Chicken also is a great way to transition a dog onto a new food as it keeps their stools firm and will allow their system to adjust better than using other types of meat. The Whole Meal When switching to a chicken dog food full time you will want to avoid switching too fast. Dogs are very sensitive to a changing diet. If you change their food all at once it will upset their stomach and intestines. This will make your dog quite ill. While chicken is what vets recommend to bind dogs when ill, you still should not cause your dog distress if you can help it. Make your food and add a small amount to his normal food to start. If he tolerates this well, reduce the old food and add more of your homemade chicken food. Do this each week or as your pup tolerates it till he is fully on the new food. Some people prefer to keep some kibble in their dog's diet to prevent tooth decay. Soft food does nothing for a dog's teeth. So, if you plan to make your own wet food you will need to offer your dog chew toys, bones, and hard cookies to help keep her mouth healthy. You can read more Natural Dog Food related articles: Here
