Dog Food

From Processed Foods To Real Dog Food

People are now leaning towards making their own dog food opposed to buying already made foods. The reason why is that many dog foods on the market are full of not so dog friendly ingredients. These foods are full of types of ingredients that make your dog need to eat more to meet his daily nutrients requirement.

These foods also make dogs need to use the bathroom more as well. Switching to more natural and homemade foods offer dogs a well balanced meal that is used and not wasted. Seeing into what manufacturers put into your pet’s food will have you switching in no time.

Where Is The Meat?

When you look at the ingredients of store bought dog food you will see that meat is far from the first ingredient. Quite often, meat is not even a large staple in the product at all. Meat by products and fillers are used to substitute for higher quality meats. The top ingredient is corn. Dogs, like people do not digest corn. It fills their bellies and then eliminates as it went in. High corn content adds bulk to the food and keeps the cost down for both manufacturers and buyers.

The problem with this is that your dog needs to eat too much to get the right amount of protein. This leads to either over eating or a dog that is not eating a well balanced meal each day. Without high quality meat there is little protein in the dog’s food, which can lead to many serious and costly health issues.

Making The Change

When you decide to make the change from processed to fresh dog food, you will want to do it slowly. While fresh is best, your dog needs to get used to new food as always. The best way to make sure that your dog will not react to the new diet negatively is to add a very small amount of fresh food in his kibble each day.

Normally, dogs like their new food so much that they will devourer the meal very fast and beg for more. Your dog is not hungry, just not used to fresh, tasty food. Every few days add a bit more fresh food and less processed food to your dog’s dish till you have transitioned fully to the fresh food. This transition will keep your dog’s digestive system from getting upset.

Dog Teeth Hygiene

There is a reason that most manufacturers sell dry dog food. Dogs clean their teeth by chewing. Hard dog food does not stick to teeth and offers a way for dogs to chew and clean their teeth. If you are on a fresh food diet for your pet you will want to adopt a new teeth cleaning method for your pet.

You can choose to brush your dog’s teeth as some pet owners do or simply give your dog a few hard bones or treats per day. Offering your dog chew toys, bones, and hard cookies each day will allow them to chew and clean their teeth for healthy mouth hygiene.
