Making A Dog Food Recipe At Home

So you want to find a good dog food recipe. There are so many more benefits to making your own pet food and treats to buying today. If you want to buy the best prepackaged dog foods to ensure that your pet is getting all the proper nutrients that he or she needs, you will find that it is more expensive than buying fresh food at the store and making your own.

If you have more than one dog, buying prepackaged dog food can cost you too much and actually make you broke. When people cannot afford good food for their dogs they begin to buy cheaper foods. These foods are full of fillers and preservatives that can actually cost you more in vet bills later on than making your own at home.

What To Use For Ingredients

The easiest to find ingredients for your dog food recipe are ground beef, ground turkey, ground chicken, peas, carrots, green beans, spouts, broccoli, garlic, codliver or flaxseed oil, and rice. Most of these ingredients you can buy fresh for inexpensive.

When using broccoli only use it in small amounts. It can cause gas and is not recommended in large amounts. You will want to use a ratio of 25/75 of meat to carbohydrates. While protein is very important for dogs, too much of anything is bad.

Making The Food

When putting together your dog food recipe you will want to be sure to finely chop or use a food processor for the vegetables. Dogs cannot digest veggies very well and so they need to be fine.

To make a large amount of food for your dog, use one pound each of ground turkey, chicken, and beef. You can choose to use it raw or brown it in a skillet.

Use one large bag of baby carrots, ½ pound of peas, ½ pound of green beans, ¼ pound of broccoli, 2 tablespoons of garlic, 2 tablespoons of codliver or flaxseed oil, and 6 cups of rice.

If you want to soften up the vegetables for older dogs or those with tooth issues, steam them prior to putting them in the food processor.

Finely chop or process the vegetables and cook your rice.

Once you have all your ingredients independently prepared mix together in a bowl or bag and stir or shake till mixed thoroughly.

Depending on how many dogs you have, how large they are, and how much they eat per day, you should have from a week to a month’s worth of food to store.

Storing Your Food

Once you are finished with your dog food recipe, you will need to store your food. The best way to be sure that your dog food stays fresh is to freeze it. Freezer bags are the best way to do this. You can put two cups per bag and then seal. Flatten the bag to an even pancake.

This type of packaging allows you to be able to store many bags on top on each other and not take up too much freezer room. You then can take out as many bags as you need each day to thaw.
